Ukraine asks to join Trans-Pacific trade pact

Ukraine has submitted an official request to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Japan and New Zealand authorities announced on Friday.

Reuters reports that New Zealand, which acts as the legal depository of the partnership, has received an official request from Ukraine to join, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand said.

He added that the next steps in the application process will be determined by all members of the CPTPP, which are due to meet in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 16.

Japan’s Economy Minister Shigeyuki Goto stated at another press conference that Tokyo, as a member of the CPTPP, “must carefully assess whether Ukraine fully meets the high level of the agreement” in terms of market access and rules.

CPTPP includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. Great Britain recently became another member. China, Taiwan, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Uruguay also have bids to join.

Trans-Pacific Partnership countries mainly export electronics, machinery, automobiles, and mineral fuels.
