Japan to assist Ukraine with modernization and restoration of irrigation systems

Japan plans to help Ukraine in the modernization and restoration of irrigation systems. The State Agency of Land Reclamation and Fisheries reported this.

A working meeting of representatives of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Agency for Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held, where the issues of Japan’s assistance for the modernization and restoration of irrigation systems in Ukraine were discussed.

The meeting was mainly about:

  • modernizing and increasing the efficiency of operational irrigation systems,
  • fixing non-operational systems when there’s consumer demand,
  • and providing technical and financial assistance to water user associations.

During the meeting, a detailed mechanism of cooperation with JICA was considered, and agreements were reached on providing the Japanese side with the necessary information and justifications for determining the priority of projects.

Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions were identified as the priority regions of Ukraine for the specified areas of work.

First, information will be prepared on projects in the Odesa region, particularly on the modernization and restoration of rice irrigation systems.
